Armin Kunkler, 94, died Saturday, July 22, 2023, in his Bonifay home. He is predeceased by many: his parents, Johann and Emma (Zimmerman) Kunkler, his wife, Virginia Jo (Akins), his nephew, Daniel, his daughter, Katherine, his brother, Edwin, and many lifelong friends.
Armin was born in Bern, Switzerland in 1928, served in the Swiss Army Signal Corps, graduated with the US equivalent of a Bachelors of Business Administration, and went on to be "the person in charge" throughout his career. He was the manager of long distance transports in Ghana/West Africa and the manager of timber camps in Ghana in his early 20s. He was selected for the executive track with Kraft Foods International where he held different financial-related positions in Germany, Mexico, Belgium and the US. His career and his love of jazz brought him to the US in 1958, where he met Jenny, married, and had three daughters, Karen, Katherine and Christine.
He retired from winters in Chicago to sunshine in Florida in 1984. He loved his property, his cats, the game of Bridge and his many Bridge partners over the years. Bridge was a perfect match for his strategic, analytic, competitive brain and his playful, social spirit. Taking care of his property kept him active and outdoors. His cats kept him company. He is survived by family in Switzerland and in the United States. He was sad to leave the property and people he loved, but he was ready to go. He will be missed by many, for a long time to come.
