MONICA  LOU  ELAM

Ms. Monica Lou Elam, age 72, of Bonifay, Florida, a beloved mother, teacher, and community servant, passed away August 2, 2024, at Washington Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Chipley, Florida.  She was born October 2, 1951, in Fort Smith, Arkansas.  Monica was preceded in death by her biological mother, Anna Gareis, her father, Paul Britt, her mother, Marianne Schmailzl Britt Henson, her sister, Julia Hodges, and her daughter, Marianne Elam.

Monica's life was a testament to dedication, love, and service.  She was a devoted caregiver to many.  Monica spent cherished time in Germany with her grandmother, forming lasting memories. She spent extensive time with her mother, Marianne, during her mother’s three work tours in France and Germany. Monica had a profound love for dogs and cats, but particularly dogs.

A dedicated scholar, Monica graduated from Marianna High School, Chipola College, and Florida State University with a bachelor’s in education. She committed 26 and a half years to the Holmes County School System, including 14 years as a librarian and the remaining years as a special needs teacher.

As a member of Esto Church of Christ, Monica's service extended beyond the classroom. She volunteered at the nursing home for many years, participated in the jail ministry every Tuesday for six years, contributed to the Holmes County literacy program, and assisted Dr. Yunus’s sisters in obtaining their driver's licenses and citizenship.

However, Monica’s greatest joy and blessing in life was her daughter, Marianne. For 25 years, Monica devoted herself wholeheartedly to Marianne, ensuring her every need was met with love and care until her death on February 29, 2012.

Monica is survived by her nieces and nephews, Paula Livergood, Alan Hodges, Marianne Hodges, Gwen Hodges, Alicia Hodges, and Chad Hodges; several great-nieces and great-nephews; along with many friends.

Monica's legacy of compassion, dedication, and love will be remembered by all who knew her.  Memorialization will be by cremation with Peel Funeral Home and Bonifay Crematory in charge of arrangements.  A celebration of Monica’s life will be held later as a graveside at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens in Marianna, Florida.
