Mr. Richard Phillip Slay, age 75, of Bonifay, Florida went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 27, 2026, at his home surrounded by family. He was born on April 20, 1951, in Chipley, Florida to the late Houston Slay and Elvie Cutchins Slay. In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by one brother, David Slay.
Richard Slay was a man whose life was rooted in faith, love, and service to others. He devoted his life to sharing the message of Jesus Christ, leading countless people to the Lord through both his work and everyday conversations. Whether serving as a correctional officer or as the owner of the Bonifay Athletic Club, Richard never missed an opportunity to speak to someone about his faith.
A faithful servant, Richard wore many hats within the church. He was a preacher, a teacher, a song leader, and an elder who always was willing to step in wherever he was needed. His love for people was evident in the way he lived, but his love for Jesus was even greater, guiding every aspect of his life. His impact will be felt for generations to come
Above all, Richard was a devoted family man. He was a loving husband and proudly held the title of “Papa,” a role he cherished deeply. To his family, he was not only a provider and protector, but a spiritual leader and constant source of strength and encouragement. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Mr. Slay is survived by his wife of 33 years, Tammy Slay; five children, Stacy Slay, Amy Jernigan and Mickey, Sherry Young, Johnny Slay and Julie, and Dawn Hersman; four siblings, Suzanne Scott, Buddy Slay and Mary, Roger Slay and Brenda, and Nancy Dunn and Max Kuntz; nine grandchildren, Houston Lane Jernigan and Makenzy, Madison White, Samantha Slay, Ethan Slay and Emily, Dylan Hersman, Braydon Young, Dalton Hersman, Jaren Manuel, and Jaylee Manuel; two great-grandchildren, Audrey Jernigan and Elijah Slay; numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 2, 2026, at Bethlehem Baptist Church with Rev. Wesley Adams officiating. Memorialization will be by cremation with Peel Funeral Home and Bonifay Crematory in charge of arrangements.
