Samuel Lee Coker, age 94, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2024, at his home in Chipley, Florida. Sam is preceded in death by his parents William H. Coker and Ada Gordy Coker, sisters Mabel and Mildred, and his sons Michael and Bill Coker.
Born in Oklahoma in 1929, to William and Ada Coker, Sam was the son of a farmer and recalled getting up with his father at 3am almost daily to deliver produce prior to going to school. He enlisted in the Navy in 1947 in Houston, Texas serving for almost thirty years, retiring as Master Chief (FTCM).
Sam enjoyed sailing, winemaking and square-dancing with the love of his life, Martha. He built his own sailboat, traveling for months at a time throughout the Caribbean and beyond. He won multiple blue ribbon honors both locally and at state level for his wine making. He was a lifelong learner, fascinated with military history, He and his wife Martha square danced well into his seventies.
Sam is survived by his wife of 41 years, Martha Coker, daughter-in-law Kim Coker, niece Bauton Dorsey, Grandchildren Anthony Coker, Samuel Coker, Michael Coker Jr., Tracy Page, and Bill Coker Jr., He also leaves behind great grandchildren Alex Coker, Zachary Coker, Hunter Coker, Haley Page and Kelton Page.
A gravesite celebration of life will be held at Lakeview Cemetery Saturday, September 14, 2024, at noon.
